You’ll learn about academic, social, wellness and cultural transitions that will influence your student’s experience, resources that support your student’s first year at UC San Diego, and ways the Office of Parent and Family Programs teams with campus offices to support your and your student’s UC San Diego experience.

Parents and families should also be on the lookout for an invitation to participate in a Parent and Family Orientation hosted by their student’s college.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which parent and family orientation programs do I attend?

All Parent and Family Orientations are optional. International Parent and Family Orientation will focus on the cultural transition that international students and their families may experience when students start at UC San Diego. It will also review resources and information to help international students and families navigate campus. If your student is an international student, or if you feel this information would benefit you or your student, we encourage you to attend. We also strongly recommend you attend the Parent and Family Orientation program hosted by your student’s college. There, you will learn information about college-specific information such as academic advising services, how students can find and build community within their college and details about student life in their college.

How do I request an invitation from the university to participate in programs?

Families of incoming international students can apply for a B-2 visitor visa by visiting the S. State Department webpage. Current international students can contact the International Students and Programs Office (ISPO) for more information and support.

When do students living on campus move in for Fall Quarter?

Each college hosts its own move in for students living on campus. Typically, move in is the third week of September for first-year students (usually tied to new student orientation programs) and the third Saturday of September for returning students. Please visit your student’s college and/or our Undergraduate Housing Move-In/Move-Out page for information.

How can I stay apprised of immigration policy updates?

We recognize that changes in immigration policy can be stressful and may raise questions and concerns for our international community. UC San Diego’s commitment to supporting international students and scholars remains strong and steadfast. Our Immigration Policy Updates page provides information on immigration policy changes and shares resources for the UC San Diego community concerning immigration.
